Before a longer fast
A stretch past a daily window is a different practice, not the next level after 16:8. Safety first, a plan you can say in one sentence, water, and an exit. Not a 72-hour challenge. Not medical advice.
Longer fasts · Part 1 of 4 · Fasting Library
Forums treat a long fast as graduation: 16:8 worked, so 48, then 72, then a week. That is a ladder. A daily window still includes food every day. A 36- or 72-hour stretch does not.
This page is the on-ramp for Longer fasts. Open-ended and multi-day fasts is why this timer has no cap. How to start fasting is still day one for a daily window. Who should be careful with fasting still comes first. Not medical advice.
Read the safety list first
A longer stretch is not a personality upgrade. Some people should not use an unsupervised window at all: pregnancy, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, under 18, underweight, eating-disorder history, glucose-lowering medicine, and several other conditions on Who should be careful with fasting.
A free timer cannot clear you. If any of that might apply, talk to a clinician before you change when you eat — and before you skip a day of food. This page does not soften that list by calling 48 hours “just uncomfortable.”
Dizziness, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or a sense you might pass out is a stop, not a long-fast snag. Eat. See When to stop a fast.
This is not the next level
A daily 16:8 is food every day. OMAD is still food every day. 36, 48, and 72 hours are not. Hydration, sleep, medicines, and how you eat again all change. Stacking two 16:8s does not make a 48.
Open-ended and multi-day fasts already said the long presets are not a beginner ladder. Stay there for why this timer has Open. This page is whether you even mean a stretch past a day.
Human trials of prolonged fasts are fewer, shorter, and more often supervised than headlines suggest. Alternate-day and prolonged fasting studies is that shelf. Clinic water fasts are history, not a 72-hour button. See Therapeutic fasting in the 19th–20th centuries.
Write the plan before Start
Why this length. When you will stop even if you “feel fine.” Who you will tell. A plan you can say in one sentence is safer than a mood.
Do not start on a deadline, a wrecked night, a sick week, or a public streak. Rest days and loud weeks already said a loud week is extra load. Extra hours on top are more load, not a quieter hour.
If you cannot name an exit that is not “when the badge changes,” you do not have a plan. Stage labels are teaching bookmarks. They are not a destination. What the stages on the timer mean is still approximate. Autophagy: what headlines get wrong is the hype shelf.
Water, not a 72-hour kit
Drink water. Thirst wears the same costume as hunger. A salt stack because a thread said “keto flu” is extra work. Hydration and electrolytes is the mineral note. Daily windows often need no special mix. Past about a day, heat, and heavy sweat raise minerals. Do not invent doses if you have kidney disease, heart disease, or blood-pressure medicine.
This cluster will still cover water and minerals past a day. Until that note is live, water is the default. Do not shop a “fasting stack” because the stretch is long.
Apple cider vinegar, fat-burning tea, and a dirty-versus-clean ranking are still extra work. What does not make it easier is that fence for daily hours. Extra hours do not make the shop a method.
The exit is the method
Ending early is a completed decision. It is not a reason to hide the row or to start a harsher preset as payback. When to stop a fast is the list. Hold it above any round number.
How you eat again is part of the stretch. After a daily window, lunch is usually enough. After a long stretch, start small. Breaking a fast gently is the landing. Refeeding after many days is a medical topic. Do not copy a hospital protocol from memory at home.
Distress around food — panic, numbness, a pull toward purging or bingeing — is a stop. A missed period is not a long-fast badge. Fasting, periods, and hormones is the stop-signal page.
What this is not
It is not medical advice. It is not a 72-hour challenge, a water-fast protocol, or a ranking of who is “ready.”
It is not Open-ended and multi-day fasts (why this timer has no cap). It is not How to start fasting (day one of a daily window). It is not Breaking a fast gently (the landing). Those stay next door. This page is before you press Start on a stretch past a day.
It is not a monthly weight-loss promise and not a reason to add a scale.
How this meets the timer
Use the online fasting timer as a clock. 24h, 36h, 48h, and Open exist so a longer plan is not paywalled. Unlimited is flexibility, not a dare. 16:8 is still a daily window. It is not a warmup lap.
Start when you stop taking calories by your rule. End Fast when you eat, including when you eat early. Stage badges are teaching labels. They are not a reason to hold a round number.
If you are still choosing day one of a daily window, go back. How to start fasting is that on-ramp. Who should be careful with fasting still comes first.
What to read next
This cluster will still cover water and minerals past a day, what usually happens after 24 hours, and what a long fast is not. Until those notes are live, Hydration and electrolytes, When to stop a fast, and Breaking a fast gently stay next door.
Coffee, restaurants, and alcohol stay in Everyday Fasting. Quieter daily hours stay in How to make fasting easier. For this week, a clinician, a one-sentence plan, water, and an exit still beat a thread about starting on 72 hours.
