How to start fasting

Start near the overnight gap you already have. Safety first, a boring first window, water, and a clock — not a 72-hour challenge or a vinegar shot. Not medical advice.

How to make fasting easier · Part 1 of 5 · Fasting Library

Forums treat “starting IF” as a Monday OMAD, a vinegar shot, or a 72-hour reset. That is a dare. Starting is closer to a night you already sleep through.

This page is the on-ramp for How to make fasting easier. What is intermittent fasting? is the definition. Choosing a starting window is the hours in detail. Who should be careful with fasting still comes first. Not medical advice.

Read the safety list first

Starting is not a personality upgrade. Some people should not use an unsupervised window: pregnancy, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, under 18, underweight, eating-disorder history, glucose-lowering medicine, and several other conditions on Who should be careful with fasting.

A free timer cannot clear you. If any of that might apply, talk to a clinician before you change when you eat. This page does not soften that list by calling a first week “just uncomfortable.”

Dizziness, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or a sense you might pass out is a stop, not a starter snag. Eat. See When to stop a fast.

You already fast overnight

Most people already go 10–12 hours between dinner and breakfast without calling it a protocol. That gap is a start. You do not need a new identity to notice it.

Intermittent fasting, as this library uses the phrase, is a chosen gap between calories. Water is almost always allowed. What usually ends a fast is the drink list when you want a rule. You do not need a rule to begin: finish dinner, sleep, wait on breakfast.

What is intermittent fasting? is the longer definition. This page is what to do on day one.

Pick a boring first window

A calm first target is the overnight gap you already have, then 12 hours, then 14 if ordinary days still work. 16:8 is one later placement. It is not a graduation requirement.

Choosing a starting window is the hours note: duration versus clock times, morning versus evening, why jumping to OMAD is a poor first experiment. Stay there for the detail. The short version: do not start with one meal a day, a 24-hour fast, or a public 72-hour challenge.

Stay at the first step long enough to see a workday, a rest day, and a social meal. A window that works once and wrecks the next three days is a spike, not a start.

Water, not a starter kit

Drink water. Thirst wears the same costume as hunger. Hunger comes in waves: a mild pang that eases with water and a change of scene is common. It is not a reason to add hours.

Black coffee is optional. It can take the edge off a caffeine headache. It can also make you shakier. It is not a fasting vitamin.

Apple cider vinegar, a salt stack, “fat-burning” tea, and a dirty-versus-clean ranking are extra work. If the hours are loud, shorten them. Do not shop. Tea while fasting is the optional mug, not a starter kit. Later notes in this cluster will go into hunger and hacks.

The first days

Log the session. Ending early is a completed decision. It is not a reason to hide the row or to start a harsher preset as payback.

Headache, a 3 p.m. slump, and “nothing is happening” are common. Common snags in the first weeks is that list. Noise is not a detox, and it is not a reason to ignore stop signals.

Eat enough when the hours are open. Under-eating makes the next closed hours louder. Eating in the window is the meals page, not a diet plan. This app will not add a scale.

Sleep debt makes the same hours feel like failure. A rest day, or Custom 12, is part of starting. It is not a failed week one.

How this meets the timer

On MyFastingClock, use Custom for a 12- or 14-hour first target. Use 16:8 when that still feels like a schedule you could live with on a normal week. Open is elapsed time with no end bell. Unlimited is flexibility, not a dare.

Use the online fasting timer as a clock. Start when you stop taking calories by your rule. End Fast when you eat, including when you eat early.

Stage badges are teaching labels. They are not a reason to push through a first week. What the stages on the timer mean is still approximate hours, not a lab.

What this is not

It is not medical advice. It is not a 72-hour challenge, a vinegar protocol, or a ranking of dirty versus clean.

It is not Choosing a starting window (which hours, in detail). It is not What is intermittent fasting? (the definition). Those stay next door. This page is day one.

It is not a monthly weight-loss promise and not a reason to add a scale.

What to read next

Next in this series: Tea while fasting. An unsweetened mug is optional taste, not a shop. If the hours are already loud, shorten them before you add a product. This cluster will also cover hunger without the hacks, rest days, and what does not make it easier.

Coffee, restaurants, and alcohol stay in Everyday Fasting. Safety stays in Fundamentals. For this week, a boring overnight gap, water, and the safety notes still beat a thread about starting on OMAD.

Key takeaways

  • Safety first. A timer cannot clear you.
  • You already fast overnight. Start near that gap, not on OMAD.
  • 12 → 14 → maybe 16. Stay at each step for ordinary days.
  • Water, then wait. Vinegar and salt stacks are not a starter kit.
  • Log messy sessions. Ending early is a completed decision. Do not pay back with a harsher preset.
  • Eat enough when the hours are open. Sleep. Rest is part of starting.
  • This is not a challenge, not a hack list, and not medical advice.
