Water and minerals past a day
Past about a day, water is still the default and minerals get louder. Heat, sweat, and no food raise the topic. A salt stack is not the method. Not a recipe. Not medical advice.
Longer fasts · Part 2 of 4 · Fasting Library
Forums treat a long stretch as a shopping list: a salt stack, “snake juice,” an electrolyte packet so 48 hours feels like 16:8. Extra work. One clock. Water first.
This page is Part 2 of Longer fasts. Before a longer fast is the on-ramp. Hydration and electrolytes stays daily windows. Who should be careful with fasting still comes first. Not a recipe. Not medical advice.
Read the safety list first
Kidney disease, heart disease, a heart-rhythm condition, and blood-pressure medicine change how you handle water and salt. Extra sodium can raise blood pressure. Extra potassium can be dangerous with the wrong kidneys or the wrong pills. A free timer cannot see those.
Pregnancy, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, under 18, underweight, eating-disorder history, and glucose-lowering medicine are still stop-or-specialist situations. See Who should be careful with fasting. Do not invent a mineral protocol because the stretch is long.
Dizziness, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or a sense you might pass out is a stop. Eat. More salt is not the answer. See When to stop a fast.
This is not the daily mineral note
A daily window still includes food every day. Meals replace sodium, potassium, and magnesium. A 12–16 hour overnight gap is mostly water. Headaches in that range are often sleep, caffeine withdrawal, or habit hunger.
Hydration and electrolytes is that map: water as default, optional coffee or tea, sip rather than chug, and when a daily window needs no special mix.
This page starts where that one stops. Past about a day, there is no lunch replacing what you drink and sweat. Heat and heavy work raise it further. Stacking two 16:8s does not make this the same problem.
Water is still the default
Drink water. Thirst wears the same costume as hunger. Plain still water, or sparkling with no sweetener, is what most people mean by staying hydrated on a stretch past a day.
Sip through the day. A sudden load of water can make you feel sloshy or, in rare cases, unwell. Thirst and urine color are rough guides, not lab tests. Do not treat chugging as a performance trick.
Black coffee and unsweetened tea are optional. They can still bother sleep, reflux, or anxiety, and they can make you pee more. If the mug makes you shaky or more obsessed with salt, skip it. Tea while fasting is the mug page. What usually ends a fast is the drink list. An “electrolyte” drink with calories or sweeteners may be food by your rule.
When minerals actually rise
Sodium, potassium, and magnesium become a louder topic as hours pass without food, in heat, and if you sweat a lot. Some people notice lightheadedness, cramps, or a dull headache that eases after a little salt. That pattern is common enough to mention. It is not proof you need a blend, and it is not a reason to keep going if you feel unwell.
A pinch of salt in water, or a cup of broth if your rule allows broth, is a different act from “more is better.” Extra sodium is a problem for some people. This page will not write a dose.
Food is the usual source when you are eating. Pills and powders have doses and interactions. If you take blood-pressure medicine, have kidney disease, or have a heart-rhythm condition, do not invent a protocol from a blog. Ask a clinician.
A stack is not the method
Forums sell quieter 36 hours as a kit: a branded fasting salt, a homemade “snake juice,” potassium powder, magnesium at a round number because a chart said so. That is extra work. It is not why a stretch past a day is a different practice.
What does not make it easier already said a salt stack is not a quieter daily hour. Extra hours do not make the shop a method. A 72-hour kit is still a shop.
This library will not publish the recipe. A water-fast protocol with grams and teaspoons is still a protocol if we call it “just electrolytes.” Do not copy a ward mix from memory at home. Do not adjust prescriptions from a thread.
Dizziness is a stop, not a salt puzzle
Lightheadedness that eases when you sit, drink water, and take a little salt if that is already your rule is one pattern. Dizziness on standing, confusion, fainting, palpitations, chest pain, or severe weakness is another. The second list is a stop. See When to stop a fast.
A round number does not outrank those signs. Hour 36 is not a reason to add more powder. A badge is not a lab. What the stages on the timer mean is still approximate.
If you already mean many days — past 72 hours, a week, twenty — minerals are a clinician’s job, not a bigger pinch. If you already mean many days is that companion. This page is still a stretch past a day.
What this is not
It is not medical advice. It is not a water-fast protocol, a salt-stack recipe, or a ranking of who is “ready.”
It is not Hydration and electrolytes (daily windows). It is not Before a longer fast (the on-ramp). It is not What does not make it easier (the daily shop fence). It is not When to stop a fast (the stop list). It is not If you already mean many days (a companion for weeks). Those stay next door. This page is when water and minerals change on a stretch past a day.
It is not a monthly weight-loss promise and not a reason to add a scale.
How this meets the timer
Use the online fasting timer as a clock. 24h, 36h, 48h, and Open exist so a longer plan is not paywalled. Unlimited is flexibility, not a dare, and not a reason to buy a stack. 16:8 is still a daily window. It is not a warmup lap.
Start when you stop taking calories by your rule. Keep water nearby. End Fast when you eat, including when you eat early, or when you should stop. Stage badges are teaching labels. They are not a mineral score.
If you are still choosing day one of a daily window, go back. How to start fasting is that on-ramp. Who should be careful with fasting still comes first.
What to read next
This cluster will still cover what usually happens after 24 hours, and what a long fast is not. Until those notes are live, When to stop a fast and Breaking a fast gently stay next door.
If you already mean many days, If you already mean many days is the companion. It is not encouragement. This page is still a stretch past a day.
Coffee, restaurants, and alcohol stay in Everyday Fasting. Quieter daily hours stay in How to make fasting easier. For this stretch, water, an exit, and a clinician when the situation is medical still beat a thread about a fasting salt.
Key takeaways
- Water is still the default past a day. A long stretch is not a starter kit.
- Minerals get louder after about 24 hours, in heat, and with heavy sweat. That is not a recipe.
- Do not invent a salt stack. Kidney, heart, and blood-pressure medicine change the math.
- Dizziness, confusion, or fainting is a stop. More salt is not the answer.
- Many days is a clinician, not a bigger pinch.
- This is not a water-fast protocol, not a daily mineral note, and not medical advice.
